Dr. Gary Pusillo, MS, PhD, PAS, CAS, is a registered feed microscopist, certified professional animal scientist, and a certified member of the American Society of Animal Nutrition. He is widely recognized for his research, presentations and publications on animal nutrition.
Q: What is the development process for oral health ingredient formulations like?
Dr. Gary: The development process of our oral health formulas has been a long and arduous process. This stems from years of research into adverse oral health effects in animals, primarily focusing on horses, cats, and dogs. I have worked with many high performing Kentucky Derby horses during my career, and I approach the oral health of a multi-million dollar racehorse with the same approach I would take with your dearest friend.
Q: From a medical perspective, why is oral health so important to your pet’s overall health?
Dr. Gary: From an overall health perspective, preventing organ and tissue damage is critical. Bacteria in dental plaque can enter the bloodstream and spread to the heart, kidneys, and liver. This spread of bacteria is called bacteremia and can damage organs and make your pet sick. Good oral health will help prevent bacteremia and the organ damage that follows.
